In order for you to properly prepare for your mission, we invite you to take part in our pre-departure preparation weekends. Organized once or twice a month in both France and Belgium, these training sessions are a great opportunity for you to come and meet us and share some unforgettable moments through fun training workshops!

Indeed, since January 2019, our pre-departure training sessions have been officially recognized by the French Civic Service Agency. This means we can now welcome young French Civic Service volunteers on our preparation weekends. And when it’s done, you will be awarded a certificate attesting of your participation in the course!

Civic and citizenship training is divided into two parts: theory and practice. The SVI organizes training sessions only for the theoretical part, but we can put you in touch with organizations authorized to provide practical first-aid training.

What are theory and practice?

  • The aim of the theoretical part is to make volunteers aware of the “challenges of citizenship” and to “pass on the civic values of civic service”. At SVI, we organize these theoretical training sessions over a weekend in France or Belgium.
  • The practical part involves first aid training, also known as PSC1. These are carried out by organizations approved by the Civic Service Agency. The training lasts one day, and at the end you will receive a certificate that you can then use in your job search.

The general objectives set by the Civic Service Agency are:

  • Helping volunteers reflect on their place in society and the means of action and commitment available to them;
  • Raising young people’s awareness of the challenges of citizenship, enabling them to become active, responsible citizens;
  • Enabling young people to understand their roles and missions in the host structures;
  • Promoting the training of Civic Service volunteers through exchange and practice between volunteers.

The aim of civic and citizenship training is to encourage volunteers to debate and reflect on their commitment and the major issues facing our society.

The training content is structured around 4 major themes:

  • The values of the Republic;
  • City organization;
  • Major social issues;
  • Openness to international issues.

Through these themes, we talk about democracy, the role of media, interculturality, the notion of commitment and volunteering, citizenship, hatred speeches and more.

Our training courses are built around a non-formal pedagogical approach. That’s why we are offering you the chance to learn through fun workshops in which you can debate with other volunteers.

The legal framework

It states that at least half of the civic and citizenship training must be delivered within the first three months of the volunteer’s mission, since the enactment of the Equality and Citizenship Act of January 29, 2017. Don’t wait to register when you are accepted on your Civic Service assignment.

Registrations

Registrations are made by the organization manager or the tutor or the volunteer, after consultation between them, directly with the civic and citizenship training organization they have chosen.

Getting to and from the training site

All training sites are accessible by public transport. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the training organizations, who will be able to facilitate your arrival and offer carshare, transports, etc.

Accommodation and food

During the two-day training weekend, accommodation and food are provided. We want to share more than just a training course with you, which is why we share many convivial moments during the weekend. Meals are prepared collectively, and night activities are planned.
